The seller of this 1994 Jaguar XJS 4.0-Liter Convertible reports buying it 20 years ago as a pre-retirement treat for himself. The Carfax report shows he is the third owner. He indicates using the Jag only as a pleasure cruiser, adding about 17,000 miles during his ownership and keeping the car garaged when not in use. He also affirms a regimen of proper maintenance. Recent chassis service included a front brake and suspension refresh in 2019 and new tires in 2020. “This XJS has been a wonderful car to own,” he says. “It has always drawn a lot of attention. I still enter it in car shows and win trophies. I have a couple other bucket list cars, so it’s time to move this one on.”
The Jaguar XJS received an attractive style refresh for 1992, with Euro-style headlights and a sleek, full-width taillight panel. Availability of the AJ16 inline-six engine widened the car’s appeal. The rear brake system was simplified, with conventional hub-mounted disc brakes replacing the former hard-to-service inboard brakes. Jaguar’s renowned independent rear suspension with dual coil-over shocks remained. The 1994 model was the first XJS with dual front airbags.
POWERTRAIN
The 4.0-liter, 24-valve inline-six was rated at 237 horsepower and 282 lb-ft of peak torque by the manufacturer when new. The seller affirms the engine is original to the car. In addition to scheduled fluid changes, he reports a new water pump installed in 2019, along with a new thermostat, hoses, and belts. He reports a quick and reliable cold or warm start and an “extremely smooth” idle. “If driven day to day, there is no smoke on start-up. If the car has been sitting for a week, there is a small puff of smoke on start up. This car does not burn, leak, or weep oil, and there are no leaks from the transmission or differential.” The ZF four-speed automatic transmission is said to operate as designed.
EXTERIOR
The seller rates the Kingfisher Blue paint a “7 out of 10” with “very few imperfections.” He indicates a quarter-sized blemish low on the driver’s door that does not show in photos. “The paint still provides a brilliant shine after a polish and wax.” He says the lower plastic bumper cover “has been epoxied and is presentable but needs attention.” The trunk-lid wing from the 12-cylinder XJS model was added as a dealer accessory.
The power canvas soft top operates properly and is in “very good condition with no tears or punctures.” He reports that the top seals “perfectly, with no leaks” and points out there is a glass rear window with a functional defogger. He says the top’s boot cover, however, while serviceable, is “ill-fitting.” All vehicle glass is described as “very good” with no cracks, but a “couple of stone chips” in the windshield. All weatherstripping is in “good shape” with no leaks apparent anywhere. All lights and signals are confirmed to work properly.
INTERIOR
The seller reports new front leather seat facings and console upholstery in June 2023, though the color does not match the interior, which appears to be either Oatmeal or Cashmere. The seller says the power-adjustable seats with driver’s-seat memory work properly. “Carpets are in good condition and have always been covered. The soft fabric headliner is in “very good condition with no tears or stains.” Photos show the burled wood trim to be in very good condition, as well, with no fading, scratches, or delamination seen in photos. The heat is confirmed to work, but the A/C has a leak and is not currently working. The cruise control and power windows, locks, and exterior mirrors are affirmed to work, as are all gauges. The car’s original AM/FM cassette stereo system, with a trunk-mounted six-disc CD changer, still operates, though a new mast antenna (to be included) will need installation, per the seller. All dome and footwell lights are functioning.
CHASSIS
The seller reports a front-end refresh in December 2019 that included new brake rotors, pads, hoses, accumulator for the anti-lock four-wheel disc brakes; new hubs; Bilstein front shocks; and a front-end alignment. The seller suggests that the four rear shocks will need near-future replacement. “The rear brakes are still functioning fine, and a set of new rotors and pads are included in the sale,” he says. The original 15-inch lattice-style factory alloy wheels (with locks) appear in very good condition, with no curb rash. The seller reports new P235/60R15 BFGoodrich Radial T/A tires installed in January 2020, now with 300 miles. (The DOT manufacturing date codes could not be seen in provided photos.) The power-assisted steering is described as “silky smooth and leak-free” and is said to track straight with a properly aligned steering wheel.
DOCUMENTATION
The seller says that this vehicle will be sold on a clean Arizona title in his name. He will include maintenance records and logs from Jaguar specialist shops in Tucson. The original owner’s manual is also included. After 20 years of enjoying and caring for this 1994 Jaguar XJS 4.0-Liter Convertible, the seller says he needs to make room for other bucket-list cars.
