Man United kicked off their summer 2023 tour in the US with an impressive 2-0 victory over Arsenal in New York.
One of the standout players for Man United during the tour is 18-year-old midfielder Kobbie Mainoo. With rare maturity, composure, and all-around attacking and defensive abilities, Mainoo has shown that he deserves a spot in the first team for the Red Devils next season.
Mainoo impressed and received praise for his performances against Leeds United and Olympique Lyon two weeks ago. And he had his best game yet against Arsenal, standing out with an assist for captain Bruno Fernandes' goal. Mainoo didn't look overwhelmed despite facing Arsenal's expensive midfield lineup under Mikel Arteta.
It was Fernandes' first game as the official team captain, and he quickly left his mark with a well-taken long-range goal. The Portuguese maestro also demonstrated why he was chosen as the captain, displaying the qualities of a leader on the field.
Although it was just a friendly match, Fernandes played with the passion and enthusiasm he is known for.
Arsenal strengthened their squad in the summer transfer market with three additions, including Declan Rice, Kai Havertz, and Jurrien Timber. Rice, the most expensive signing for the Gunners, couldn't make an impact in the 59 minutes he played. The English star showed good ball control but couldn't help Arteta's team defend well, and they conceded two goals in the first half. Timber had a decent performance, but Havertz had a lackluster display.
This was Man United's third match on their summer tour, and they have yet to concede a goal, facing Leeds United, Lyon, and now Arsenal. It's a very positive sign for Ten Hag to be hopeful about.
Against Arsenal, Man United not only kept a clean sheet but also defended well to the extent that Tom Heaton didn't have much to do. If the Red Devils continue to impress like this, they will be a formidable force in the title race.
While Ten Hag is urgently searching for a true striker, Sancho continues to take on the highest role in the attack - a position he played in the 1-0 victory over Lyon at Murrayfield last week.
Despite his natural position being on the wings, Sancho still impresses when playing centrally. He showcases excellent speed and strength, as well as the necessary alertness and decisiveness to score Man United's second goal after a mistake from Gabriel. It wouldn't be surprising if the former Dortmund star continues to take on this role in the future
