A couple in China are begging for help when their son was born with 11 extra fingers and legs.
Each of Honghong’s feet has 8 toes
Baby Honghong, now 3 months old, living in Hunan province, was born with 15 fingers and 16 toes. The boy has two palms on each hand, but no thumbs.
After doctors at the local hospital announced that the operation would be difficult, Honghong’s parents are now trying to find ways to treat their son.
According to People’s Daily, Honghong suffers from polydactyly, a condition in which babies are born with extra fingers or toes, with an incidence of 1 in 1,000. However, having an extra 11 fingers like Honghong is extremely rare.
Honghong’s mother also suffers from extra fingers on both hands and feet. Because of the fear that this malformation would be passed on to her baby, she went for checkups and ultrasounds many times during her pregnancy at hospitals in Shenzhen city, Guangdong province. When she was nearly 5 months pregnant, this mother even went to Phuc Dien District Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital for a 4D ultrasound. However, doctors said that her baby was not deformed.
Honghong’s mother also suffered from extra-toe deformity and the condition was passed on to her son.
When Honghong was born, the couple panicked when the boy’s extra-toe condition was more serious than his mother’s. Each Honghong foot has 8 fingers, while the hand has 8 and 7 fingers, respectively.
Liu Hong, professor of Pediatric Orthopedics at Hunan Provincial People’s Hospital, told Zou Chenglin, Honghong’s father, that the surgery would be difficult. Honghong is currently too young to be given anesthesia, but he will need to undergo surgery between 6 months and a year old before his joints are fixed.
However, due to poor economic conditions, the surgeries, which cost hundreds of thousands of yuan, were too much money for Mr. and Mrs. Zou. Currently, the couple is trying to manage to treat the child.
