Nicole Lucas Hall is a loving mother of two, her son Asher and daughter Winry. At just 13 months old, Winry entered the world with a rare birthmark adorning a quarter of her face.
Reflecting on the moment they laid eyes upon their daughter, Nicole recalled feelings of confusion and concern for Winry's well-being, as neither of them had ever encountered such a distinctive birthmark before.
Recalling the moment, she said, "When they first handed her to me, I thought it was a bruise. But it quickly became apparent to my husband and me that it was not a bruise. And, similarly, I thought it resembled a mole." Initially, they assumed it might be something dangerous, but the doctors swiftly alleviated their concerns. Winry was born with a rare condition called congenital melanocytic nevi, with an estimated prevalence of around 1 in 50,000 births. They were reassured that the birthmark was likely purely aesthetic, with any associated health risks comparable to those of other birthmarks or moles.
