It’s finally September and it’s got us thinking about all things fall- the pumpkin spice, sweaters, leaves changing, and football Sundays! All these gorgeous seasonal details will definitely have you excited to take those sweet fall baby pictures.
The baby stage is the perfect time to get adorable photos of your child before they grow up so quickly. Once they’re toddlers, forget about having them sit still to sit in a basket of hay– They’ll be more interested in running circles around you instead! The great thing is, you don’t need a fancy DSLR camera to take some DIY photos of your baby. If you have a later generation smart phone, you probably have an amazing camera on it. The images on your iPhone or Galaxy can even be blown up with high resolution and still look gorgeous framed and hung.
DIY Baby Picture Tips
The biggest tip I have for taking DIY baby pictures is to use natural lighting. Any professional photographer will tell you this one as well! Chances are that you don’t have high-tech studio lighting in your home and the incandescent or fluorescent lights will make any photo look amateur. Instead, opt for outdoor photos with indirect sunlight. DON’T shoot in the direct sunshine, but rather in the shade.
Make sure there are no shadows on the baby either, but even lighting. If you can’t be outdoors, have your baby really close to a window with the shades or blinds up and your home lighting OFF. This will give you amazing looking photos! Use simple props that you have at home, like your own fall decor. If you don’t have much, check out your local Hobby Lobby, Michaels, or any craft store for great props. Remember, less is more so don’t overdo it! Go ahead and dust off those pumpkins and scarecrows and start experimenting with your camera or iPhone. Fall Baby Pictures
Here are some adorable fall picture ideas for babies that you’ll want to take all season long! If only your baby will stay this little so you could take them year after year!
Who doesn’t love a naked baby? Just prop a mini pumpkin on your baby’s bottom and you have an adorable photo. This works best for the younger ones as they’re not as squirmy to shake the pumpkin off.
Milk Bath of Pumpkins
Lay a black and white checkered blanket outside and fill a decorative metal bucket as a milk bath for your little one! Sprinkle a few plastic pumpkins and leaves from any craft store and top it off with a gorgeous orange bow if you have a little girl.
It doesn’t get more basic than this! Grab a Starbucks cup for your little one to hold and all the other fall decor.

This one is a little scandalous, but if you have a sense of humor it’s adorable! Perfect for a baby boy!
Inside a Pumpkin
You can’t go wrong with a baby in a pumpkin! If your little one is small enough, simply cut out a hole at the top and put them in. Don’t forget to scoop out the insides! If they’re a little bit holder, cut out two holes near the bottom for their legs to stick out. Don’t forget a cute little pumpkin hat on top!
This adorable sunflower photo session doesn’t have to be done in a sunflower field! You can definitely imitate this look in your own yard. Choose a grassy area to place your baby (clothed or naked) in a metal bucket. You can use plastic sunflowers or real ones and place them all around in galvanized pitchers or vases. Use an adorable ivory lace outfit like this one for your little girl too.
Sleepy newborns are great for propping up in pumpkins too! Again, remember to scoop out the seeds and put a blanket inside to help prop them up. Top it with an adorable candy corn hat and sprinkle some candy corn around and you have a perfect fall newborn session!
A baby in a basket works for all seasons, but I love it in the fall because it has that rustic harvest feel. Combine it with a tan, burlap style blanket, pumpkin topper hat, and some plastic pumpkins of various shapes and sizes, and you have an easy photo op!
In a Bowl of Candy Corn
What’s better than a baby in a pumpkin? A baby in a bowl of candy corn! How cute right? This one doesn’t require many props except for a big glass bowl, bags of candy corn, and a cute candy corn topper hat.
You can use a pumpkin cookie or a real small pumpkin to cover their front regions. Add in some fall decor and you’re set!
I just love this photo so much because it reminds me of my daughter and her baby brother. She would totally put him in a pot and “pretend” to cook him! LOL Put a little witch costume on your older child and stick the baby in a big pot and voila- hilarious halloween family photo!
Basket of Apples
Although when you think of fall, most people think of pumpkins, apples are right up there too for the beginning of fall! I love the colors used with this photo. Grab some different colored apples, a wooden basket, and a fall-themed blanket or scarf. Don’t forget baby overalls to complete the fall look!
Pumpkin Bum
Lay your naked baby on their belly on top of a white sheet or blanket. Sprinkle some fall leaves or pumpkins around them and cover their bum by holding a plastic pumpkin above them.
The painted baby bum! Too cute! Get some washable orange and green paint and hope your baby doesn’t scoot around too much. If you have a younger baby, place them on their belly for the photo.
Another baby in a basket, but this time for a 1st birthday photo shoot! I grabbed some pumpkins and mums and my plastic leaves and some gourds. I took this right in my backyard!
In a Field of Pumpkins
A baby in a pumpkin patch is an easy photo that anyone can take! Just try to make sure no one is around and get a good angle.
All the fall feels with some flannel and a beanie. Surround your baby with some pumpkins and it’s a perfect photo op.
Your little pumpkin amongst all the other pumpkins! Make sure to use a naked baby for cuteness overload.

If you have a ton of trees in your yard, wait until the leaves fall and grab the baby in a pile of leaves picture!
This was my take on a fall cake smash that I did myself. I bought a small smash cake and decorated a cake stand with some plastic leaves. I used this One cake topper and decorated the rest of the scene with mums and pumpkins.
Another baby in a pumpkin because I can’t get enough! This one commemorates baby’s first Halloween. These types of photos work best before your child is crawling around so they won’t try too hard to squirm out. Just make sure you have good measurements for the leg and top holes so the baby fits.
Incorporate all that Halloween candy for an adorable photo op with your little one. Add a cute pumpkin zip-up onesie and you’re set!
My favorite fall picture idea for babies is a painted pumpkin bottom! I just can’t deal with this cuteness!
This is a sweet way to photograph your baby. If you have a large mirror, have them sit on it and sprinkle some fall leaves, floral arrangements, and pumpkins. Make sure you get the photo at an angle where your reflection isn’t in the mirror!
I love this indoor fall photo shoot. Sit your baby in a wooden crate with some fall-colored pillows. You can use a wooden backdrop or just a clear area in your home with good lighting. Father all your fall decor around your home like pumpkins and leaves and you’re set!
Give your baby a pumpkin halo with this cute photo. A bunch of mini pumpkins surrounding your little one is perfect for this one.
Put your baby next to some scarecrows for a sweet photo. Of course add some sweet fall clothing to make it even more festive.
