The first shower. That first moment the new mother is truly alone in months. Her body is her own, except it doesn’t feel that way anymore. That first shower is a quiet moment where a woman can admire her body, process her birth, and take a few minutes to fill her cup again. | Eva Thomassen Fotografie

That first meal post-birth just hits different. This momma’s first meal of a bacon cheeseburger, large fries, and a Coke was so necessary to hold off the hangry. | Dalijah Amelia

This is postpartum. Most of the house is in diapers (or nude). Everyone has cried at least once today, mom included. And they’re all running on fragmented sleep trying to navigate through this new territory. It’s magical – the snuggles, the love, the roller coaster of emotions. | Dana Lawrie

We’ve been there – the pure ecstatic exhaustion that comes with having a sleepy newborn and a busy toddler. This momma looks so beautiful as she graciously handles both of her children’s needs along with her own.| Briana Escamilla

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. It’s more than skin deep, but it’s always loving the skin you’re in – stretch marks, wonky belly button, textured skin, surgery scars and all. | Kit and Me

You might still look a little pregnant. Your stomach might be dark. Loose skin and some new “tiger stripes” might be added. Your c-section scar reminds you that you are a badass for braving major abdominal surgery to bring your baby into the world. Welcome to your body. Embrace it. You did that. | Zoë Allamby

Give your body grace. It has housed and grown humans for 9 months and beyond. It has fed them, nurtured them, provided the perfect environment for them. All before they took their first breath. The body is a beautiful thing. It’s miraculous. And so are you. |Erica Lo Photography

Two months postpartum | Sarah Baughen

Two months into her postpartum journey, this courageous mother chose to share photos that truly captured her experience. When asked about her decision, she expressed the following:

“Once upon a time, I was a first-time mom. During pregnancy, I was taken aback as I witnessed my stretch marks inching higher up my abdomen each day, hoping they wouldn’t surpass my belly button (but they did). The numbers on the scale continued to climb, surpassing my desired limit of 100 kg (but they did).

I vividly recall the moment when I stood before a mirror after the baby’s arrival, the fluids had subsided, and the haze of the first few months had lifted. I was shocked. I had no inkling that my postpartum body would exhibit sagging skin, deep stretch marks, and severe muscle separation that would leave me looking pregnant for years to come.

I had never seen anyone who resembled me after giving birth. I was unaware that this was just another version of normal. We often conceal, mask, and feel ashamed of our postpartum bodies, believing that we are alone in our struggles. But let me assure you, you are not alone. There are countless versions of pregnancy and postpartum experiences, whether it’s your first or fifth child, and each one is valid and ‘normal.’ This is simply my version of normal.”

In sharing her story and photos, this brave mother aimed to break the silence and show solidarity with other women. She wanted to emphasize that there is no single definition of postpartum beauty and that embracing and accepting our unique journeys is a powerful act of self-love and empowerment.

The first trip to the bathroom after birth. I think every person who has given birth can feel this photo. Postpartum recovery is tough and it’s not talked about enough. It comes as a shock to almost all new mothers. A peri-bottle and benzocaine spray are lifesavers in those early days, as is taking it slow and steady. Just know that it won’t always feel like this, and that you’re a rockstar. A very sore rockstar, but a rockstar nonetheless. | Kristyn Dingman

This photo gives us all the feels! Captured by her adoring husband, this mama, Liz, said she saw a fierce and strong warrior mama who birthed their child in such a raw, transforming and utterly miraculous act. Women are truly amazing, and we should never doubt our strength and power, or let negative self-talk make us feel like any less of the goddesses we are!| Liz Raney

This is not a time to worry about “bouncing back.” It’s a time to heal, bond, recover, and rest. Just a few weeks ago, this body was praised, adored, and celebrated. It was “cute.” It had purpose. It was creating life. Society has set up an unrealistic expectation of the way we should look weeks after having a baby, and this momma refuses to feel shame about her body now that her baby is here. Let’s continue to celebrate, adore, and praise this body – in all her forms. | Monica Murph
