Son Doong cave is located in Son Trach commune, Bo Trach district, Quang Binh province, in the Phong Nha – Ke Bang cave complex.
According to researchers, Son Doong cave was formed about 2-5 million years ago. Overall, the cave has a width of 150m, a height of more than 200m, a length of up to 9 km. Estimated capacity of Son Doong cave is 38.5 million cubic meters.

2. Discover the birth of the mysterious Son Doong cave exploration journey
Son Doong Cave was discovered in 1991 by Mr. Ho Khanh – a painter who went to the forest to find agarwood. After encountering heavy rain, he looked for a cliff to temporarily hide, suddenly seeing the phenomenon of clouds flying up a lot from the shop with a roar inside.
It wasn’t until 2006, when Howard Limbert’s British Royal Caves Association expedition came to Vietnam to explore this area, Mr. Ho Khanh informed them.
After many failed attempts to find the way, it wasn’t until 2009 that Mr. Ho Khanh and the expedition managed to locate Hang Son Doong. The cave is located deep in the old forest, the terrain is difficult, far from the main road and cannot be found on Google Earth.
With the event on April 5, 2009, after discovering and exploring Son Doong cave, the British expedition shocked the world. The discovery of Son Doong cave is likened to finding the top of Mount Everest underground. Many major foreign newspapers such as Daily Mail, The Sun, Breitbart, Telegraph, etc. simultaneously published about Son Doong cave.
Since Mr. Ho Khanh was the one who discovered this cave, the expedition asked him to name it. He took his own name to name the cave, called Ho Khanh cave. But then the expedition asked him to rename the cave Son Doong and he agreed.
The name “Son Doong” was created by combining the pre-existing place name “Doong” with the Sino-Vietnamese word “son”. Near the entrance of Son Doong cave, there is a village of Van Kieu people called Doong village.
