Fourfold Blessing: Unique Ways to Differentiate Quadruplets during Birth
Α couple who wanted to add one final baby to their family ended up welcoming quadruplets – and they have to paint their toe nails to tell them apart.
Gaby Hagler, 40, and her husband, Patrick, 50, from Texas, were thrilled when they discovered they were expecting last year. The couple already had a child each from previous relationships and also shared a two-year-old toddler named Sammy.
As they hoped to welcome a fourth and final baby into their family, they were astonished when their sonographer revealed the incredible news during their 12-week scan – they were expecting naturally conceived quadruplets.
Fast forward to 34 weeks, and Gaby gave birth to Αdam, weighing 4 lbs 8 oz, Bennett, weighing 4 lbs 7 oz, Ϲoby, weighing 4 lbs, and Dane, weighing 4 lbs 1 oz, through a planned caesarean section.
"I sometimes get the quads confused, especially Bennett and Ϲoby because they look so identical. To tell them apart, I've painted one of their toenails green and the other white," Gaby reveals.
"We also have designated colors for Αdam and Dane, but as they've grown older, their individual features have become more distinct, making it easier to differentiate them," she adds.
With the addition of multiple babies in the household, the family now goes through 47 diapers, 32 bottles, a packet and a half of wipes, and three loads of baby laundry every day.
"It's been a complete restructuring of everything with four babies," Patrick shares.
"We are striving to balance our existing life with the demands of caring for these new babies, and despite the challenges, it has been a truly honorable and joyful experience," he adds.
Due to the nature of the multiple pregnancy, Gaby was closely monitored and considered high-risk.
"I was so exhausted that I had to take breaks while driving just down the road," she recalls.
"I was determined to ensure the babies reached 4lbs, so I made sure to consume enough calories to achieve that goal," she continues.
"Towards the end, I could feel the strain on my stomach, but my ultimate focus was on reaching the 34-week mark," Gaby concludes.
After the babies were born on 22 June at 34 weeks, they were immediately taken to the neonatal unit for a thorough examination.
Αdam and Dane spent only two weeks in the neonatal unit before they were deemed ready to go home, while Ϲoby and Bennett required an additional two weeks of care.
During this period, a close family friend initiated a GoFundMe page to assist them in raising funds for a van suitable for their now larger family.
"We are immensely grateful to the generous donors who made it possible for us to purchase the van," Gaby expresses with gratitude.
"Adjusting to this new life has been quite a change, as we're now relying on our retirement savings. Despite the challenges, it's heartwarming to have all our children home and enjoy cuddling with them," she adds.
"Their individual personalities are starting to shine through now – Adam has taken on the role of a leader, Coby exudes cheerfulness, Bennett remains remarkably relaxed, and Dane is our expressive and affectionate one," Gaby shares with a smile.
"It's a journey filled with challenges, but it's also an incredibly beautiful experience," she concludes.
