Due to his fragile health, Kasen underwent emergency surgery. If he pulled through, a liver transplant was the next crucial step to ensure his long-term well-being.
Mitayah Donerlson, Kasen's mother, could only patiently wait, knowing that her baby was on the organ transplant waiting list. Despite the difficulties, she remained steadfast in her belief that a donor would emerge. That unwavering faith that carries us through the darkest moments.
Adding to the challenges, Mitayah's world was turned upside down when she discovered that several family members had tested positive for COVID-19. Tragically, Kasen also contracted the virus. His condition worsened with each passing day, and he was hospitalized for three agonizing days. Fortunately, he received exceptional care from a dedicated team of doctors who successfully battled the virus.
Gradually, Kasen's health began to improve. Two weeks after recovering from COVID-19, Mitayah received the most incredible news of her life: a donor had been found for Kasen. "All I could do was cry. Those were tears of a mother, tears of joy," shared Mitayah. The long-awaited transplant surgery was scheduled, and the weight on her shoulders was finally lifted. Relief washed over her, and she felt an immense sense of peace.
Following the surgery, Kasen showed remarkable progress. His expression transformed, and the yellow tint in his eyes became a thing of the past. Even his demeanor started to change, as he embraced the exuberant energy typical of a child his age.
Since his birth, Kasen has spent most of his time in the hospital. Recently, he celebrated his first birthday in the intensive care unit, surrounded by his mother and the dedicated staff who have been with him throughout his challenging and victorious journey this past year.
Amid balloons and smiles, Kasen joyfully marked this significant milestone. The road ahead for Kasen remains arduous, and he will continue to stay in the hospital due to safety precautions, particularly knowing the risks he faces if exposed to the virus again.
