Incredible Record Set: 59-Year-Old American Woman Becomes Oldest Mother of Twins
A 59-year-old woman from the United States has reportedly achieved a remarkable milestone as she is believed to be the oldest woman in the world to give birth to twins. Laureen Cohen and her husband Frank Garcia welcomed their children, Gregory and Giselle Garcia, through a successful Caesarean section, despite facing significant complications.
During the delivery, Mrs. Cohen had to undergo an emergency hysterectomy to ensure the safety of both herself and the twins, as she had lost 33 pints of blood. Speaking to the newspaper, she expressed her happiness, stating, "I'm happy. I came out healthy, and the two babies came out healthy."
Mrs. Cohen, who also has a 27-year-old daughter named Renee from her previous marriage, received immense praise from her husband, Mr. Garcia, who is approximately 20 years younger than her. He described her as amazing and praised her courage, saying, "Laureen has guts."
He further shared, "Having baby twins was one of my dreams. It feels like a miracle." Mrs. Cohen admitted that she had only wished for Raquel, her daughter, to have a sibling. She remarked, "I wasn't expecting twins, but that's what happened."
Mrs. Cohen was admitted to the hospital in March due to placenta previa, a condition where the placenta presses against the cervix, and placenta percreta, which occurs when the placenta grows through the uterus. On May 24, a scheduled Caesarean section took place, six weeks before the expected due date. However, two days earlier, Mrs. Cohen's uterine wall was breached by the placenta, necessitating immediate medical intervention.
"They made a high incision," shared the new mother. "They pulled the babies out from the abdominal area without disturbing the placenta." However, the placenta remained attached to the wall of her uterus, described as being adhered "like crazy glue."
"I'm grateful to the doctors at Columbia Presbyterian for saving my life and saving my babies' lives," expressed Mrs. Cohen, acknowledging the medical professionals' crucial role in her journey.
