Manchester United has recently announced that seven players will be departing the club at the end of the 2022/23 season as their contracts expire. Notably, forward Mason Greenwood will be retained.
According to the latest statement from the Red Devils, defenders Phil Jones and Axel Tuanzebe will bid farewell to the team upon the expiration of their contracts. Additionally, five young players, including Ethan Galbraith, Di'Shon Bernard, Eric Hanbury, Charlie Wellens, and Manni Norkett, will not be retained by Manchester United.
Goalkeeper David de Gea's contract is also set to expire this summer, but there is no official information regarding a new agreement. However, he is also not listed among the players who will be leaving.
The statement from Manchester United reads: "Regarding David de Gea, discussions are still ongoing for a potential new contract. Tom Heaton and Nathan Bishop have had their contracts extended until 2024."
"Contract extensions have also been completed for youth defenders Rhys Bennett and Ethan Laird. Meanwhile, U21 team coach Tom Huddlestone is expected to stay after discussions for a new contract. Young forward Mateo Mejia has also been offered a new agreement."
Notably, Mason Greenwood remains in the list of players for the 2023/24 season. Greenwood was previously suspended from internal matches by Manchester United following allegations of domestic violence and threats to his partner, Harriet Robson.
In February of this year, Greenwood was granted freedom and had all charges dropped after Harriet Robson withdrew her complaint. Currently, the couple has reconciled, and the English forward is preparing to welcome their first child.
Manchester United has stated that an internal investigation is underway to determine whether Greenwood has tarnished the club's image or violated any contracts. Greenwood is being retained due to his existing contract with Manchester United, which is unrelated to any internal disciplinary actions.
