"Man United Offloads Goalkeeper Nathan Bishop to Sunderland After Clash with Paul Mullin"
Sunderland has acquired goalkeeper Nathan Bishop from Manchester United for a price that was not disclosed.
Bishop has signed a three-year deal with the Black Cats and will likely serve as a backup to Anthony Patterson. The Black Cats kιck off their Championship season this Sunday against Ipswich.
Bishop, who recently transferred to the Stadium of Light, could not contain his elation at joining the team that eliminated them from the playoffs the previous year.
“You see the direction that the club is going, playing young players and allowing them to express themselves and push on in a great league,” he said on the team’s official website.
“That is so exciting to me, and it motivates me to work hard to join such a prestigious team and club.”
‘Nathan is a player we have been watching for some time and we’ve kept patient to finalize this trade,’ Black Cats sporting director Kristjaan Speakman said.
He wants to play in the starting lineup and is eager, upbeat, and committed to getting better. We’re looking for a tough atmosphere out on the field every day, and we think Nathan will be a great addition to an already formidable group of keepers.
It’s not always simple to line up at the appropriate time, but we’re glad Nathan is here before the season starts, so we thank Man Utd for their cooperation on this.
After a nasty collision with Paul Mullin last week, United fans booed Bishop during their 3-1 loss to Wrexham.
Wrexham’s star player, who he challenged, is currently in the hospital with a punctured lung.
But now that United’s preseason tour of the United States is over, Bishop will have a new beginning in the north east after agreeing to a permanent move with Tony Mowbray’s side.
The teenage goalkeeper moved to Old Trafford from Southend in 2020, however he has only played for the Red Devils’ Under 21 team and had a fantastic loan season with League Two’s Mansfield in 2021-22.
Last year, he did get some playing time after coming off the bench, including four Premier League games and four Papa Johns Trophy matches.
After Monday’s friendly against Borussia Dortmund, Red Devils manager Erik ten Hag gave Bishop a shirt signed by the first team squad.
Bishop wrote, “Just wаnted to share my sincerest apologies to @PMullin7” after the incident with Mullin.
It was an honest mistake and unintentional occurrence; there was no malice intended. Praying for a speedy recovery so we can watch you score goals again soon!
At the time, Mullin’s admirers were relieved by an image of him giving a thumbs up from the hospital. We appreciate the feedback. Everything’s OK, he proclaimed.
Referee Mark Allatin saw the collision, assessed Mullin’s condition, and immediately called for medical attention from Wrexham’s bench at the Snapdragon Stadium.
Attempts by Bishop to get in touch with Mullin in the Wrexham locker room after the game were met with hostility from manager Phil Parkinson.
‘I’ve got to be honest with you, he added, ‘I’m angry about it. I’m not pleased in the least with the clumsy and careless challenge made during the preseason game.
I haven’t seen the goalie, and right now he should definitely avoid us because we’re not in a good mood.
It was a clear case for a red card, and it was not given. It’s still a hazardous challenge even if it doesn’t prevent a goal, so when you combine the two, he should have been sent off the field.
Bishop was just cautioned and replaced by Radek Vitek, but Erik ten Hag’s team alleged that the switch was prearranged.
‘It’s a risky challenge, and it’s very clear that Paul Mullin is our talisman,’ Parkinson continued. I was really impressed by the guys’ response following that. As a collective, our guiding principles are “resilience” and “sticking together.”
Wrexham won the National League last season behind Mullin’s 47 goals, who scored in all competitions.
They had a record-breаking season, scoring 111 points thanks in part to their heated rivalry with Notts County.
It is unknown how long Mullin will be out, but he is presently recovering in California with Wrexham co-owner Rоb McElhenney.
On Saturday, the Red Dragons will host the MK Dons in their League Two season opener.
