Official! Nkunku joins Chelsea
Chelsea Football Club has confirmed their first signing of the summer 2023 transfer window, securing the services of French forward Christopher Nkunku from RB Leipzig.
Nkunku, a key player for RB Leipzig in the 2022/23 campaign, helped the team secure a Champions League spot and successfully defend the German Cup title. He agreed to join Chelsea in December 2022, with the transfer fee amounting to 60 million euros. The French player will sign a 6-year contract, expiring in June 2029.
This transfer deal, under the management of Graham Potter at the time and prior to the significant spending spree in January by owner Todd Boehly, marks the club's first signing of a French international.
However, almost 7 months after the deal was agreed upon, Chelsea Football Club has now officially announced the arrival of the 25-year-old player through their social media channels, welcoming him to the club.
"I am delighted to join Chelsea," Nkunku shared. "Great efforts have been made to bring me to the club, and I am looking forward to meeting my new coach and teammates, as well as showing the Chelsea fans what I can do on the pitch."
"Having played in Ligue 1 and the Bundesliga, now I want to play in the Premier League, one of the top leagues in the world. I am excited about this challenge and will be proud to wear the Chelsea shirt," added the French international.
Chelsea's Co-Directors of Football, Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley, stated in a release, "Christopher has proven himself as one of the outstanding attacking players in European football over the past two seasons, and he will bring quality, creativity, and versatility to our squad. He has demonstrated his ability at the highest level with RB Leipzig and the French national team, and we look forward to seeing him integrate with his new teammates ahead of the upcoming season."
