Transfer Update: Midfielder Sandro Tonali has completed his move from AC Milan to Newcastle United, passing his medical and signing a contract with the Premier League club.
Official: Tonali joins Newcastle in a record-breaking transfer fee.
Renowned transfer expert Fabrizio Romano announced, "Official! Sandro Tonali joins Newcastle in a contract worth €70 million, including add-ons. AC Milan will also have a 10% sell-on clause if Newcastle sells the Italian player in the future. The contract is valid until June 2029."
This marks Newcastle's second signing of the summer 2023, following Yankuba Minteh from Odense for €7 million. It is a statement of intent from the Magpies in their ambitions to compete for the Premier League title. Not many expected Tonali to leave Milan, but Newcastle swiftly turned that into reality.
Tonali made his professional debut at the age of 17, wearing the Brescia shirt in a Serie B match against Avellino. His natural position is in the deep-lying midfield role. Tonali possesses the qualities of a regista (a player who operates as a defensive midfielder, responsible for intercepting play and dictating the team's tempo and creative output). His presence will combine with Bruno Guimaraes to form a quality central midfield partnership in Newcastle's squad as they prepare for the upcoming Champions League campaign.
