Former football legend Wayne Rooney has spoken out, advising his fellow teammate Harry Maguire to leave Manchester United, as he no longer enjoys the trust of manager Erik ten Hag.
Maguire was stripped of the captaincy at Man United earlier this week, and the English defender revealed that he felt "extremely disappointed" with Ten Hag's decision.
Maguire stated, "After discussing with the manager, he informed me that there would be a new captain. Therefore, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to the Manchester United fans for all the incredible support during my time as captain.
"Since I took on this role - over three and a half years ago, I have had the great privilege of leading Manchester United. It has been one of the proudest moments of my career to date. One of the greatest honors Manchester United has bestowed upon me."
Despite losing the captain's armband and becoming the fifth choice at center-back, Maguire affirmed that he would still stay at Manchester United to compete for regular playing time. However, Manchester United legend Rooney believes this is a sign that Ten Hag no longer trusts Maguire and advises him to leave the club to further his career.
In a recent interview with The Athletic, Rooney said, "When stripped of the captaincy, how will Maguire continue at the club? It shows that the manager truly doesn't have faith in him. It puts Harry in a position where he has to seriously consider his future. The manager has shown that he is not part of the plan."
"I'm sure Harry will want to play, for himself and for his career with the England team. The best thing now might be for him to move on," Rooney added.
