Before Harry Maguire, other famous stars like John Terry and Granit Xhaka have also experienced being stripped of their captaincy.
Arsene Wenger was disappointed when he chose William Gallas as captain after Thierry Henry's departure in 2007. There was a famous protest after a defeat to Birmingham in February 2008, followed by Gallas' controversial comments about his teammates in his autobiography. When some first-team players showed disrespect towards the French defender, Wenger eventually had to strip Gallas of the captain's armband.
Gallas would later hold the captaincy at Emirates Stadium once again in 2010, but ironically, it was when he was playing for Tottenham and celebrated a 3-2 victory over his former club.
In the case of Jamie Redknapp's absence due to injury, the Finnish defender shared the captain's armband with Robbie Fowler and lifted the League Cup, FA Cup, and UEFA Cup in the 2000/01 season.
Hyypia publicly expressed his disappointment after losing the captaincy at Liverpool. A year later, he officially became The Kop's new captain, but was quickly replaced due to a decline in form. Steven Gerrard took over as captain a year later.
Hyypia openly admitted to reporters that he was unhappy with this decision.
Granit Xhaka
Xhaka's incident with Arsenal fans is infamous. After being insulted by the home fans, Xhaka responded angrily and threw the captain's armband on the ground in a match against Crystal Palace.
It was no surprise that Xhaka lost the captaincy. What was surprising was that he managed to repair his relationship with Arsenal fans before moving to Bayer Leverkusen in the summer.
Xhaka's outburst towards the fans led to him being stripped of the Arsenal captaincy.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang took over from Xhaka as Arsenal's captain. Initially, it seemed like the right decision as the striker won the FA Cup in 2020. With his outstanding performances at the time, the Gabonese star earned a lucrative contract extension.
Things took a downturn when Aubameyang struggled to score in the 2020/21 season. Further controversies arose, leading to a strained relationship between Aubameyang, Arteta, and the club.
John Terry
Very few players have been stripped of their captaincy in a more dire situation than John Terry.
The incident with Anton Ferdinand resulted in Terry losing the captaincy of the England national team. The disaster occurred during a clash between QPR and Chelsea in the 2011/12 season, sparking a debate about racial discrimination, with Terry accused of making racially abusive remarks towards Anton Ferdinand.
Before the legal proceedings began, the FA stripped Terry of the captaincy on the England national team. The Blues star was later acquitted in court, but the FA's penalties remained. Terry played for England once again at Euro 2012 but officially retired from international football shortly after to focus on his club career at Chelsea.
