The squirrel cuckoo (Piaya cayana) is a large and active member of the cuckoo species, characterized by an extremely elongated tail spanning from 40.5 to 50 centimeters (15.9 to 19.7 inches) in length. It weighs between 95 to 120 grams (3.4 to 4.2 ounces). Adult birds display predominantly chestnut upperparts and head, transitioning to a softer, almost pale pink shade on the throat. The lower breast exhibits a gray hue, the belly appearing nearly black, while the central tail feathers take on a rufous tone, with white tips on the outer ones. Its bill presents a yellow coloration, and its eyes are of a red hue.

Young individuals of this species display a gray bill and eye ring, along with a brown iris. Their tail has less white compared to adults. The squirrel cuckoo bears resemblance to the black-bellied cuckoo, yet it can be differentiated by its yellow bill and a crown that shares the same hue as its back.

The squirrel cuckoo predominantly inhabits forests and woodlands, favoring the canopy level and locations along the forest perimeters. It can also be found in coffee plantations, shrubbery, tree-studded pastures, as well as areas adjacent to watercourses within arid regions. It has been observed in residential areas as well, avoiding particularly arid wooded zones.
