Arkadas, a three-month-old German shepherd puppy, arrived in Mexico on a special plane from Turkey. The puppy is a gift from the Turkish government to Mexico, in honor of Proteo, a German shepherd dog who died while performing rescue tasks in the earthquake that hit Turkey and Syria in February 2023.

The little cub is very active and curious. After a medical examination, it was learned that he is in perfect health and training began for him to be part of the canine unit of the Mexican army.

This is the thanks that Turkey made to Mexico, since Proteo, a German shepherd rescue dog, was sent to the European country to help the victims of the earthquake, and although it was initially speculated that Proteo died from a landslide, his trainer clarified that It was due to his age and the inclement climate of Turkey: “The cause of his death was not due to a landslide, the prevailing weather conditions in that country, as well as his age, counted a lot, and the trip, which was undoubtedly quite long for him”, clarified Villeda Márquez, a member of the Secretariat of National Defense of Mexico.

Sergeant Ramírez was commissioned to train Arkadas, and he is determined that the dog will follow in Proteo’s footsteps and become an exemplary rescue dog. From day one, the sergeant dedicated himself to teaching Arkadas search and rescue techniques, such as finding people under rubble or detecting the scent of the wounded.

The pup showed great intelligence and training ability. As his training progresses, he gets used to the sound of sirens and the noisy environment of the city. Sergeant Ramirez is very impressed with how quickly Arkadas is learning.

During the welcome ceremony to Arkadas, the Turkish ambassador spoke about the gesture that Mexico had towards Turkey during the 2023 earthquake and thanked the country for its solidarity. He also spoke about Proteo’s bravery and dedication and the importance of rescue dogs in emergency situations.

Arkadas, the little puppy that came to Mexico as a tribute to Proteus, became a symbol of friendship and cooperation between countries, and an example of the importance of rescue dogs in times of crisis. But above all, he was a faithful and brave dog, following in the footsteps of his predecessor.

Mutual aid between nations is essential in situations of natural disasters, such as earthquakes, since it allows a quick and effective response to care for the victims and minimize damage.
