The dog builds a bond with the baby by playing and giving toys to the baby every time the baby cries, surprising everyone with its intelligence and alertness.

The phrase “man’s best friend” truly comes to life when observing the way dogs interact with babies. They exhibit a gentle and nurturing demeanor, becoming devoted siblings to their human counterparts. One such heartwarming example is Brutus, a 3-year-old Bullmastiff residing in Northern California with the Michalek family. Despite his imposing appearance, Brutus is a loving and playful companion. As the Michaleks awaited the arrival of their first child, they were uncertain about how Brutus would respond to the new addition.

Brutus has always been fond of children, frolicking with them at the park and eagerly embracing their attention. However, having been the sole focus of his family’s affection, his reaction to the impend ing arrival remained a mystery. According to Bonnie Michalek, “He’s always loved kids. Every time he’s heard kids outside laughing he gets excited.”

Interestingly, Brutus seemed to sense Bonnie’s pregnancy before anyone else did. On nights when Bonnie’s husband was absent due to work, Brutus staunchly refused to leave her side, disregarding treats and comfort in his crate. This behavior, initially dismissed as stubbornness, turned out to be a protective instinct. When Kayden, the newest Michalek member, was born nine months later, Brutus was seamlessly integrated into the family dynamic.

Brutus temporarily resided with Bonnie’s parents as they introduced the baby to their home. Upon his return, he was showered with affection before being introduced to Kayden. The moment was magical as Brutus immediately showered the baby with kisses and cuddles, solidifying a unique and heartwarming bond. From then on, Brutus assumed the roles of both babysitter and guardian, rushing to comfort Kayden whenever he shed tears.

Brutus’ chosen remedy for Kayden’s tears is a well-worn yellow fluffball, his own cherished toy. He believes that gifting it to Kayden will pacify the baby and alleviate his distress. With Kayden’s presence, both human and canine family members are on a path of discovery and growth. And as for Brutus, he has realized that there exist toys not exclusively meant for dogs, expanding his horizons beyond the beloved fluffball.
