A recent incident in Ireland has left netizens and animal lovers deeply shaken. Despite being chained to a metal fence, a courageous two-year-old mother dog displayed unwavering love and protection for her newborn puppies, even in the face of extreme adversity. Reports from the Irish Times reveal that the mother dog and her puppies endured days without food and water. Fortunately, a passerby spotted them in a field near the small town of Elphin and took immediate action.
The concerned individual quickly summoned help, ensuring that the mother dog and her puppies were transported to a veterinary clinic operated by the Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ISPCA) for urgent medical attention. Some rescuers speculate that the dogs were abandoned shortly after the mother gave birth, but the exact duration of their entrapment remains a mystery. The manager of the ISPCA center described the act of chaining a pregnant dog as inhumane, posing a grave risk of starvation and dehydration over the course of several days. According to the rescuer's account, the rescue took place during inclement weather with constant rain and chilly temperatures, amplifying the potential dangers had prompt assistance not been provided.
The mother dog and her cubs were taken to ISPCA National Animal Center in Longford County for emergency treatment. Subsequent results showed that they were not significantly disadvantaged, except for being left hungry for too long in the lonely fields.
When ISPCA posted on Facebook a picture of a mother dog taking care of her cubs, viewers left a lot of comments. One reviewer: “It’s inconceivable that any owner could be so heartless to throw them away in the cold. The mother dog is so pitiful to have to protect her young. Because the owner could not be found, the rescuers named the mother dog Emmy Lou. The six puppies are named Billy Ray, Dixie, Dolly, Dotty, June and Patsy. They will stay with the ISPCA until an adopter is found. According to WHO data, only about 10% of feral dogs are brought to an animal rescue center each year. Apparently, Emmy Lou and her children were lucky enough to be rescued by a kind pedestrian.
