Axel’s sacrifice during the anti-terrorism operation in Jammu and Kashmir’s Baramulla area has not gone unnoticed. The brave Indian Army sniffer dog, who tragically lost his life, will be honored with a ‘Mention-in-Despatches’ in this year’s bravery awards, coinciding with India’s 76th anniversary of independence.
Among the 42 recipients of the prestigious ‘Mention-in-Despatches,’ Axel stands out for his exceptional and honorable service. This recognition surpasses other commendation cards given to canine heroes, such as the Chief of Army Staff Commendation Card and Vice Chief of Army Staff Commendation Card. It highlights the immense valor displayed by Axel and acknowledges his significant contribution to a counter-insurgency operation.
Axel, a two-year-old German Shepherd, served with the 26 Army Dog Unit. He joined the unit in December of the previous year, ready to protect and serve alongside his human comrades.
During the counter-terrorism operation with 29 Rashtriya Rifles, Axel and his fellow canine companion Bajaj played crucial roles. Bajaj cleared and secured the building, allowing Axel to proceed and detect any hidden terrorists.
With utmost precision, Axel methodically cleared the first room. However, as he entered the second room, a cowardly terrorist indiscriminately opened fire, targeting the brave canine. Despite being shot, Axel displayed remarkable resilience, managing to walk for 15 seconds before succumbing to his injuries.
When the gunfight finally concluded, the soldiers recovered Axel’s body. The loyal dog had sustained multiple wounds, including a femur fracture, testament to the intensity of the encounter.
In addition to Axel’s recognition, his loyal canine companion Bajaj has also received commendation from the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), further acknowledging their joint contribution to the mission’s success.
According to reports from WION, the Baramulla operation spanned eight hours and resulted in the elimination of the terrorist, identified as Akhtar Hussain Bhatt, a resident of Kupwara and a member of the banned Jaish-e-Mohammed group.
Axel’s selfless sacrifice and unwavering dedication to duty serve as a poignant reminder of the invaluable role that military dogs play in safeguarding the nation. His bravery and that of his fellow canines deserve our utmost respect and admiration. Their unwavering loyalty and courage in the face of danger inspire us all and reinforce the bond between humans and animals in service.
