The short-beaked cheo ward is a small-sized species in the cheo ward group (about 18 cm). The male has a short black bill, a black head and neck (drawing down to the upper chest), pale red lower body, simple red stripes on the wings, and upperside of the tail. The female has a yellow underbody, gray head and back.
